This is a question that plagues the people who really want to believe in the existence of angels – but are skeptical, unwilling to accept what they cannot see as reality. Believers, on the other hand, have no problem believing in their existence even if they cannot explain why they believe.
Recently, a commentator on CBS News said of the existence of, “Angels only announce the birth of Jesus (“Do not be afraid”). And those halos and wings make the kids playing them look pretty darn cute.” This sums up the feelings of many. Feelings and opinions, however, do not negate what God says.
Jesus spoke of the existence of angels (and that’s enough for me because I believe in Jesus!). However, if you are not a believer in Christ you will not just accept His word as fact like I do. So how do I prove the existence of angels to you? I’m not sure I can but here’s a little food for thought …
In his book, Angels and Demons: What Do We Really Know About Them?, the author says we cannot prove the existence of angels “Because the empirical data — angel appearances — can’t be proved to be caused by real angels, who are invisible spirits. … All our knowledge begins with the visible, with sense experience.”
Herein lies the problem: to believe in the existence of angels requires faith in what is not seen and which doesn’t require proof. If you do not have faith in the unseen realm of the spirit you cannot believe in angels because you cannot see them. Angels don’t go around tooting a horn saying, “Here I am!” They are spiritual beings who may appear visibly when necessary or, at God’s command, but they are always present in society as unseen beings. As stated, it takes faith to believe that. The Bible says, “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1 NIV)
So what is left to prove our case that angels exist? We have numerous accounts from people who have had encounters with angels – you can read many on this site. We also have God’s word in the Bible that angels exist.
if you don’t believe in the Bible as the Word of God you should at least accept it for its historical data.
While the Bible doesn’t say when angels were created, it speaks of them in the earliest books. Other ancient manuscripts mention specific “orders” of spiritual beings: Angels, Powers, Principalities, Dominions, Thrones, Archangels, Seraphs and Cherubim. There is also reference to the fallen angels in historical data and in the Bible.
While there is n no scientific evidence that angels exist, those who have faith in God and His word believe in their existence because He says it is true. This article will not change your mind if you’ve already convinced yourself of their non-existence. However, if you are truly seeking to know the King of the Angels (Jesus Christ), it will give you a little food for thought and perhaps guide you on your way to discovering this unknown world that exists beyond our senses: the world of the spirit where angels – both good and evil – do exist.
I believe in angels, therefore this is a non-issue for me. Hopefully, this article will help you discover your own faith to believe in God’s messengers, His holy angels. But more than anything I would rather you believe in and accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord!
